The modernisation processes in North Norway after 1945 also altered the gender and working-class patterns. Many fishery communities changed from a household-based economy to an industrial-based economy, and people from the fishing towns and villages became wage earners. Industrial work with processing and curing of fish and other marine products gave new job opportunities for women.
